Learning SELECT can save you from hours of tedious mechanical tasks and time-consuming busy-work. Best of all, SELECT is easy to learn. TEACH will not show you everything that SELECT can do, but you will learn enough so that you can begin creating and editing documents on your own. If this is the first time you have used TEACH, follow the program from beginning to end. It will take you about 90 minutes. If you just want to refresh your memory, choose one of the lessons from the TEACH menu, which will appear soon. THE RULE: The printer prints characters only at SPECIFIC places, depending on the Pitch choice. That means that the union when it installs the seats won't be able to align the seats from row to row so that the left and right aisles line up....more of the drunken designer PAGE -2- look. You will then have even margins when you move to 10 (or 12). * If you must set your margins while at 10 (or 12), then: must must ange portions of the text to the next larger pitch. SECOND, if this is not possible, blanks are inserted into the text. BUT, if a pitch change occurs midword extra attention is paid to midword midword this case to maintain the pitch within the word as close to the same as possible. Set LEFT and INDENT to ODD numbers Set RIGHT margin to EVEN numbers * This will provide even right and left margins. WHAT ABOUT TWO OR MORE FONTS? You may well ask. If you intend to use two fonts and two pitch changes then: RIGHT margin is a multiple of the Pitch multiple [1w THE REASON for this is that a change in pitch causes the printer to actually reposition the head, which will cause a gap in the text as the head of course is always repositioned to the right (do not count the Hebrew version) about one half character or more. (call for further details). MARGINS What can we say. If you follow the rules for letter speed above you'll have a good shot a multiple LEFT and INDENT a multiple plus one of the Pitch. multiple plus one multiple plus one For example: \C10 or \C12 or \C5 or \C6 \L11 \L13 \L6 \L7 \I21 \I25 \I11 \I13 \R70 \R84 \R35 \R42 it. OFFSET Much o9aNOTE: All of the settings ARE THE SAME. They will set the left margin 1 inch from the left of the page, the indent margin is 2 inches from the left and the right margin is 7 inches from the left. One final word. When using offset we don't know which pitch calculation to offset, as it cannot be calculated. If you want offset, you may use only one pitch. PAGE -3f the same. It can handle only one value, otherwise the offset must change, proportionally, for each new line depending upon the pitch of that line. RULES FOR SETTING PAGE LENGTH DEFAULT SETTINGS: If no page length is specified, 66 lines per page is assumed as p p - MEMO SPEED DRAFT SPEET We have implemented as many as 8 pitch (or cpi) values and 5 fonts are available in draft and memo speeds. Now that you realize the infinite number of mathematical possibilities just remember that as regards 10 pitch 4 are thin and 5 are thick. JUSTIFY RIGHT The priorities are as follows: FIRST, chthe default value. At six lines per inch this assumes that the page is 11 inches long. At 8 lines per inch this assumes an 8 1/4 inch page, and of course at 2 lines per inch this assumes a page of 33 inches in length. There are two options: you can set the page length first or the vertical spacing first. There is a difference as you will see. PAGE -4- C6 do \C12it PAGE -5- words (remember head repositioning). If possible change the FONT instead. IF YOU DO, leave a blank in the LARGER pitch: use \C12....let's \C6do\C12it NOT \C12....let's\PAGE LENGTH FIRST: If you select the page length first the page length is calculated at 6 lines per inch. Thus, setting page length at 30 (\P30) would mean 30 lines per page at 6 lines per inch would yield a 5 inch high page. VERTICAL PITCH FIRST: When you set the vertical pitch first the page length then has something to calculate with other than the default 6 lines per Marjie \JN cc: \jc \h dec test document \f page ## \* this is a note \JR d fksf ks \T10 \B10 Marjorie Bachert ^SELECT^ Information Systems 919 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Kentfield, CA 94904 July 17, 1982 zxczc @NAME @ADDR1 @ADDR2 @CITY, @STATE @ZIP Dear @GREET: dfvlsf xc,xv.,,b \JL t inch.
