README for PAP-related software

Papd is the print spooler. It is used to accept PostScript print jobs
over AppleTalk from (Macintosh) clients and place them in the queue for
lpd(8) to mess with.

Three other useful programs are included:

pap will send a PostScript file to an AppleTalk connected printer.
This is useful for interfacing an AppleTalk printer with
lpd(8). It can also be used to conduct interactive sessions
with a PostScript printer. This is useful for learning
PostScript. The fontlist2.sh script uses this to get the list
	of resident fonts.

papstatus simply obtains the status string from an AppleTalk
connected printer. Useful for debugging and also cheap
	entertainment for small children.

psf is an lpd(8) filter for printing text and PostScript on
PostScript printers. As shipped, it is configured to invoke
pap to send jobs to a printer, but it can be made to just write
	PostScript to a tty.

psorder is a utility for psf, to reverse pages on non-reversing
printers. The Makefile may need editing, more documentation
	will follow.

In the source directory, there are a few extra files that are not
documented anywhere else. They are:

    papd/etc.papd.conf sample papd configuration file.

papd/LWPlusFonts a fontfile (for papd) for the Apple LaserWriter
			Plus.

product.sh a shell script that causes a printer to print
its own product name (e.g. LaserWriter II
NTX). This is useful for creating
			printer-independent procedure sets with the
MACPS software (available in info-mac/unix at
			sumex-aim.stanford.edu).

setprintername.sh a shell script that will rename a printer
(change its Object and/or Type NBP names).
This is useful when you want to hijack an
AppleTalk printer so that users must print
			through your spooler.

set8bit.sh a shell script that sets the serial interface
of a printer to accept 8-bit characters (since
Macs send high-bit set characters and since the
default for Apple's printers is to mask the
			high bit, this is useful).

fontlist.sh a shell script that causes a printer to print a
list of resident fonts (for creating a fontfile
			to use with papd).

fontlist2.sh a shell script that writes a list of resident
fonts to stdout (also for creating a fontfile
			to use with papd).
