This is the README file for netatalk-1.1. This version should run on
sun3s and sun4s under SunOS4.1.1, on IBM PC/RTs running 4.3AOS, and on
4.3BSD-Reno vaxen.

Netatalk is an implementation of the AppleTalk Protocol Suite for
BSD-derived systems. The current release contains support for
EtherTalk Phase I, DDP, RTMP, NBP, ZIP, AEP, ATP, PAP, ASP, and AFP.
The complete stack looks like this:

    AFP
     |
    ASP PAP
      \ /
       ATP RTMP NBP ZIP AEP
	| | | | |
   -+---------------------------------------------------+- (kernel boundary)
    | Socket |
    +-----------------------+------------+--------------+
    | | TCP | UDP |
    | DDP +------------+--------------+
    | | IP |
    +-----------------------+---------------------------+
    | Network-Interface |
    +---------------------------------------------------+

DDP is in the kernel. ATP and ASP are implemented as libraries.
"Atalkd" implements RTMP, NBP, ZIP, and AEP. It is the AppleTalk
equivalent of Unix "routed." "Afpd" provides Macs with an interface to
the Unix file system, "papd" allows Macs to spool to lpd, and "pap"
allows Unix machines to print to AppleTalk connected printers. "Psf"
is a PostScript printer filter for lpd, designed to be used with "pap."
"Psorder" is a PostScript reverser, called by "psf" to reverse pages
printed to non-reversing printers.

Most of the section 8 man pages exist. The section 3 and 4 man pages
are actually just place holders for us. Expect them in a later
release.

There is a separate README file for each system that netatalk runs on,
e.g. README.SUN. See the approprate file(s) for more information. The
README.RT and README.PORTING are empty. If you want to work on an RT or
an unsupported system, contact us for more information.
